2024 charitable donation deadlines

Year-end giving is an opportunity to ensure your donation makes a difference while taking advantage of potential tax benefits for 2024. By acting before December 31, you help Doctors Without Borders deliver lifesaving medical care to those in crisis while ensuring your generosity counts for this calendar year.

Your TRIPLE-matched year-end gift empowers our teams to make every second count for our patients around the world. Help us save lives. Donate today.

Important deadlines for charitable donations 2024:

  • Mailed checks: Gifts by mail must be received by January 8 to count toward the 2024 fiscal year. MSF USA’s donation mailing address is: Doctors Without Borders, PO Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030.
  • Online donations: Gifts by credit card must be made by 11:59 PM PT on December 31, 2024 for us to issue a tax receipt dated 2024. You may need to notify your credit card company if you intend to make a large gift to avoid possible delays, as your charge must be processed by 11:59 p.m.
  • Stock transfers: With a strong stock market performance this year, you have a unique opportunity to maximize your charitable impact through a gift of appreciated securities, including stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Gifts of securities must be received on or before December 31 to be processed before the end of the year. Speak with your broker regarding internal policies and any cut-offs the broker may have in place. We encourage you to start the stock transfer process one to two weeks prior to December 31 to ensure your generous gift counts toward your year-end giving.
  • IRA contributions: If you are considering making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA to meet your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), we recommend checking on processing times with your IRA administrator. For a QCD to count toward the current year's RMD, the funds must be transferred from your account by December 31.

By meeting these deadlines, you ensure your gift supports Doctors Without Borders’ vital mission and is recognized for 2024 tax purposes.

Benefits of a year-end gift to Doctors Without Borders

  • Save lives: When you give to Doctors Without Borders USA, 80 percent of all donations go directly to our lifesaving medical humanitarian programs. From evacuating patients from the frontlines in Ukraine to staying behind to save lives in Gaza, Doctors Without Borders goes where others can’t or won’t go.
  • Personal fulfillment: The end of the year is a time for reflection and gratitude. Knowing that your generosity helps deliver life-saving care to some of the world’s most vulnerable populations can bring a deep sense of personal fulfillment and purpose.
  • Tax benefits: Supporting Doctors Without Borders before the year’s end not only contributes to lifesaving medical care worldwide but may also provide valuable financial benefits to donors. Contributions made by December 31 may qualify for deductions on your 2024 tax return, reducing your taxable income while maximizing the impact of your support.

How does Doctors Without Borders use year-end donations?

As we near the end of a year defined by an increasing number of refugees and displaced families, rapidly spreading disease outbreaks, and escalating violent conflict, Doctors Without Borders is already preparing for what may come in 2025. We can’t predict where the next crisis will be or the challenges we’ll face, but we can commit to making every second—and every dollar—count.

Here’s what our work will look like in 2025 and beyond.

  • Going where others can’t or won’t: From evacuating patients from the frontlines in Ukraine to staying behind to save lives in Palestine, Doctors Without Borders is there.
  • Remaining independent and impartial: We provide lifesaving care based on need alone—regardless of a patient’s race, religion, ethnicity, or politics.
  • Directly funding medical care: When you give to Doctors Without Borders, 80 percent of all donations go directly to our lifesaving medical humanitarian programs.
  • Speaking out: Impartiality does not mean being silent. From malnourished children to inequitable access to care to civilians being targeted in war—we speak out against needless suffering.
  • Remaining a diverse, global movement: Your generosity powers over 69,000 Doctors Without Borders staff members of more than 169 nationalities working in over 70 countries.
  • Rapidly responding to crisis: Thanks to our independent funding, when a crisis strikes, we can immediately respond. We don’t have to apply for grants or face red tape.
  • Innovating: From researching new treatments to finding new ways to provide care in remote settings, Doctors Without Borders is leading the next generation of humanitarian aid.
  • Going where we’re needed most: Not all emergencies make headlines. Constant communication with our staff helps ensure that we can prevent crises, often before they become headlines.
  • Being creative: We find creative solutions to deliver care in the most remote places—from mobile clinics traveling up the Amazon River to inflatable surgical tents becoming operating rooms in 48 hours.
  • Embedding in communities around the world: More than 80 percent of Doctors Without Borders staff live and work in their home countries. That means when a disaster strikes, they’re already on the ground.
